Porcelain Dental Inlays and Onlays

PORCELAIN RESTORATIONS

For many years, if you needed a dental restoration, it was made of metal. So, while the restoration fixed what was wrong with your tooth or teeth, it was noticeable in your smile. In many instances, this made people shy away from showing their teeth when smiling, in pictures or at social events to prevent showing off that they had dental work done.

The last few decades have advanced dental restoration technology and materials, so now’s your chance to have that old metal filling, inlay or crown replaced! We offer patients the opportunity to update their smiles with porcelain restorations.

Our cosmetic porcelain restorations include:

  • Inlays
  • Onlays
  • Tooth-colored resin composite fillings

Not only do these restorations look great, but they also strengthen your teeth to protect them from further damage. If you have never tried cosmetic dentistry, replacing old fillings with tooth-colored porcelain restorations is a great way to start!

Porcelain restorations allow the patient to function just as if they had a natural tooth.

Safe Healthy Teeth

PORCELAIN INLAYS/ONLAYS VS. COMPOSITE FILLINGS

Miami cosmetic dentists Dr. Raul Garcia and Dr. Conchi Sanchez-Garcia generally recommend tooth-colored fillings when your cavity is small to moderate in size. However, for large cavities that leave your tooth with very little healthy tissue, porcelain inlays and onlays are a better and more effective cosmetic dental restoration option.

Porcelain inlays/onlays are custom-made and hardened in a lab. They are very durable and help strengthen your remaining tooth structure because they bond into your teeth.

As porcelain inlays/onlays are created in a lab, they require two office visits. Most of our patients believe that porcelain restorations such as porcelain inlays/onlays are worth the extra office visit.

Porcelain Inlays vs. Onlays

Porcelain inlays and onlays are made from the same materials and are created with the same lab process, but there are differences between them. The main difference is size.

A porcelain inlay will treat the same small problems as a composite resin filling.

But porcelain onlays are larger and are designed to cover more of the tooth. Porcelain onlays are used when the area of decay or damage is too large for a filling or inlay but not so large that a dental crown is required.

Our Miami cosmetic dentists will prepare your tooth at your first visit and create an impression of it to be sent to the dental laboratory. Once there, a highly trained dental lab technician will make your custom-made restoration. A temporary filling will be placed in your tooth while you wait for the final porcelain restoration.

When you return for your second visit, the inlay or onlay will be bonded onto the tooth. Please contact our Miami cosmetic dentists today to schedule your initial appointment. Miami Designer Smiles serves patients in Miami and Coral Gables, Florida.
