Porcelain Veneers vs. Lumineers

If you are considering improving the appearance of your smile with cosmetic dental restorations, you may have learn that porcelain veneers are a great treatment to take care of discolored, uneven, or gapped teeth. You may also have learned about the type of porcelain veneers known as Lumineers. Lumineers are a special branded type of porcelain veneer that advertises a number of advantages over traditional veneers, such as the fact that Lumineers do not require preparation of your teeth, are completely reversible, and are more convenient than traditional porcelain veneers.

However, Lumineers also have a number of disadvantages. First, because they are just applied to the front of your teeth, their ability to reshape your smile is limited. Porcelain veneers can be used to significantly reshape your smile, but Lumineers can provide only the most minor of correction. Second, because Lumineers are very thin, they have to be extra opaque to correct tooth staining. This can make them look less like natural tooth enamel, which is faintly translucent. Finally, because Lumineers are placed on top of your natural tooth without any preparation, they create a small shelf at the edge of each Lumineer, which provides a harborage for bacteria and requires extra care to prevent decay at the edge of each Lumineer.
