Questions About Your Dental Crown

Miami and Coral Gables, Florida

Miami Designer Smiles believes in preventing tooth loss, whenever possible. Our Miami cosmetic dentists can preserve a tooth even if it has sustained serious damage from decay or injury, replacing the exterior with a durable and beautiful crown made of dental porcelain.

The cosmetic dentists at Miami Designer smiles are here to provide you with answers to some frequently asked questions about dental crowns.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown replaces the entire outside of your tooth, making it stronger, repairing damage, and preserving the inside of your natural tooth including the blood vessels, nerves, and tooth root. Your dental crown will be custom-created in a lab to look just like your surrounding teeth.

Why should I get a dental crown instead of having my tooth pulled?

It is always best to keep your natural tooth if you can. A missing tooth can cause serious oral health problems over time, including tooth decay, gum disease, shifting teeth, and even shrinkage of your jawbone. Missing teeth can lead to the instability of the bite, which contributes to a prematurely aged look and jaw pain. Pulling the tooth may be cheaper and easier in the short term, but in the long run, you will be better off with a dental crown.

Is my dental crown going to come loose or pop off in a few years?

No. Our advanced adhesive technology and the high-quality labs that we use ensure that your crown will be made to fit perfectly. Furthermore, as LVI-trained cosmetic dentists, Dr. Raul Garcia and Dr. Conchi Sanchez-Garcia, will create all of your restorations to work properly with the opposing teeth, protecting your oral health as well as the longevity of your crown.

What will my dental crown look like?

Your dental crown will be made of porcelain and custom-crafted to look just like your natural teeth. It will be perfectly color-matched to the surrounding teeth. As dental porcelain has the same light-reflecting quality as natural tooth enamel, it will not be noticeable to others. Most likely, they will just comment on your beautiful smile.

What can I expect during a crown procedure?

While the needs of each patient vary, most crown procedures entail two visits to our office. At the first appointment, you will receive a local anesthetic, after which one of our Miami cosmetic dentists will remove any area of the tooth that has been damaged. Next, the tooth will be cleaned, and impressions will be taken that are used as a model to fabricate your crown. A temporary restoration is placed on the tooth. At your subsequent appointment, which usually is scheduled a week or two later, your beautiful new crown is installed.

Are there alternatives to dental crowns?

Yes, there are some alternatives that may be appropriate depending on your unique dental needs. Dr. Garcia and Dr. Sanchez-Garcia always opt for the most conservative approach. Whenever possible, they will recommend a tooth-colored filling or porcelain inlay/onlay rather than a dental crown because those restorations preserve more of your natural tooth structure.
