Tobacco Destroys Oral Health

While World No Tobacco Day came and went May 21, the message behind this important global holiday remains. Tobacco-related deaths continue to increase around the planet, and so too do the negative effects of tobacco on our health. From firsthand, secondhand and even thirdhand illnesses, tobacco smoking and chewing remain one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

In case you need a reminder, here are some reasons why consuming tobacco products of any kind is bad for your oral and overall health.

Bad Breath

Perhaps the most basic of problems caused by tobacco consumption of any kind is bad breath. From smoking to vaping to chewing tobacco, it can leave a terrible taste in the mouth that lingers on your breath. Not only does it smell bad, but it also causes your mouth to dry out, which can increase your risk of cavities.

Stained Teeth

One of the chief complaints of smokers and chewers is that their teeth become discolored yellow or brown due to the tar and other chemicals in their cigarettes and chewing tobacco. This discoloration can be embarrassing and nearly impossible to clean away on your own. Even professional whitening can’t always get teeth completely white.

Gum Disease

Smoking can cause periodontitis, or gum disease. This is an inflammation of bacteria in the gums that can cause the loss of gum tissue, teeth and even portions of the jaw bone.

Oral Cancer

If you smoke, you put yourself at risk for oral cancer, which can be fatal. You can also put yourself at risk for lung cancer and many other illnesses, such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and more. Definitely not worth the risk!

Fertility Issues

Though not oral health-related, smoking can make it hard for women to conceive, and it can cause many problems for your unborn baby if you are pregnant, including DNA damage, low birth weight and premature birth. It can also increase your risk of miscarriage.
